Are you team soc or team greaser? Either way, 7th-grade students have been loving reading The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton for many years.
“My favorite part is to see students make connections to the characters, and the characters are very diverse and I like watching students attach themselves to certain characters,” Tori Herdman, 7th grade ELA teacher, said.
There are lots of things that make up a story. Every scene and character plays its role in the story whether you notice them or not.
“I think that a very important scene in the book was when Johnny killed Bob,” Maya Arp, (7), said. “And my favorite character from The Outsiders is probably Steve because he doesn’t do anything throughout the whole book, everyone else does something horrible and Steve is just there, he just exists.”
Even though this book is 56 years old, most people love it because they can relate to it. Many students find a character they can relate to or are similar to. Even though this book is fiction, many people forget that it isn’t real because of how well Hinton wrote the book. It makes people feel like they are living with the greasers.
“My favorite part of the book was the rumble because I liked seeing that the greasers were stronger,” Kealinn Sashington (7) said.
The book was also adapted into a movie in 1983 which people loved to watch. Some well-known actors in the movie are Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Matt Dillon, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio, and Diane Lane. Although everyone loves the movie, some people like the book better.
“I like the book better because I like feeling like I’m in Ponyboy’s head and I can really understand him,” Herdman said.
