On Nov. 10, 2023 CVMS staff and students had to evacuate the school twice during the fourth and fifth period due to a fire alarm malfunction. The Austin Fire Department arrived and determined that these alarms occurred because a helium balloon from the previous veterans day celebration floated up and interfered with a fire alarm sensor.
“I knew that from the initial alarm that there wasn’t a threat of life and limb, but I knew that we still needed to exit the building because it was the appropriate thing to respond to a fire alarm,” 8th Grade Assistant Principal Stephen Teal said.
AFD safely removed the balloon and allowed for students to reenter the building. The schedule was altered for the rest of the day.
“Now we see how well prepared we are to exit the building.” Teal said.
