October. An exciting time when the weather starts to get nice, Halloween is around the corner, and for baseball fans, it’s time for the playoffs. Ten teams are battling each other for supremacy over the baseball world. For the players, that means everything they’ve worked for comes to this moment. The winner will be remembered as the 111th team to hoist the championship trophy of America’s Pastime.

As of Friday Oct. 16, 2015 four teams are left in the hunt for the World Series. The Texas Rangers traveled out of the country to Canada to take on the Toronto Blue Jays where the Blue Jays came out with a 6-3 victory. In the seventh inning with the game tied at two, the Rangers scored on controversial call as catcher Russell Martin was charged with a throwing error. With fans throwing beer cans and other objects on the field, the Blue Jays tied the game at three after Josh Donaldson hit little flare to over the second baseman’s head. Then, Jose Bautista launched a three run home run to give the Blue Jays the lead.

The Houston Astros traveled to Kansas City to take on the Royals after the Royals came back to win game four. The Royals won 7-2 and ace Johnny Cueto never gave the Astros a chance. In the second inning the Astros got a single then two run home run, but that was it. Cueto retired the last 19 batters he faced and went eight innings giving up only two runs. The Blue Jays will travel to Kansas City Friday Oct. 16 for game one of the American League Championship series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 ET.

On the other side of the bracket, the St. Louis Cardinals were eliminated by the Chicago Cubs as the Cardinals lost game four 6-4. The Cubs dominated the series as they won the series 3-1. They also showed their big bats as 15 of their 20 runs scored in the series were by home runs. The New York Mets traveled to Los Angeles to take on the Dodgers and the Mets won in a close 3-2 affair. Daniel Murphy was the hero for the Mets, as in the fourth inning, when Lucas Duda walked, Murphy took advantage of the sleeping Dodger’s defense and stole third base. The next batter Travis d’Arnaud was able to score Murphy with a sacrifice fly which tied the game at two. Two innings later Murphy took a 93 mph from Zack Greinke (who was an all star this year and in contention for the Cy Young award as the best pitcher in the National League) and drove it into right field to give the Mets the lead for good. The Cubs will travel to take on the Mets for game one of the National League Championship Series. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:30 ET on Saturday Oct. 17.

The Cubs definitely made a statement by beating the best team in baseball, the Cardinals. The road to the World Series only gets easier from there! Not only have the Cubs beaten the kings of baseball, but they also have the best record of the remaining teams. This makes them the favorite to win the World Series. Lots of people were rooting for the underdogs, the Houston Astros, but they lost in a heartbreaking fashion. “Well, I wanted the Houston Astros to win the World Series because I grew up in Houston watching games in the Astrodome,” says Mrs. Oliver, “My family still lives there, they have been going to games at Minute Maid Park and I wanted them to be excited.” Be sure to stay tuned to see who hoists the trophy!
