The Mobile Loaves and Fishes organization is dedicated to giving out food to the poor and homeless. It started in 1998 when parishioners of the St. John Neumann Catholic Church began giving out meals to homeless people they saw living on the streets of Austin. Since then, they have expanded and performed many truck runs.

Mobile Loaves and Fishes has expanded to the cities of San Antonio, Providence (in Rhode Island), New Bedford (Massachusetts), and Minneapolis (Minnesota). They’ve served over four million meals and had 18 thousand volunteers help them. They also created the Community First! Program which helps give homes to people who are homeless and in need of living quarters.

Additionally, they created the Community Works Program which helps give the unemployed a job. They teach them skills for a job in craftsmanship or other areas. Combined with the Community First! Program, the Community Works Program helps give homeless people a chance for a new life.

“It’s fun to go out into the community and serve and give the homeless something they don’t have,” says 8th grader Jack Baddour. There are many ways people can help the Mobile Loaves and Fishes Organization. For example, adults can become a truck volunteer. This requires helping prepare and deliver food and other items. Some other ways to help include going on a delivery, preparing meals, and hosting food drives. The organization also advises launching fundraisers, donating money, help building homes, and donating items. So get out, volunteer, and support Mobile Loaves and Fishes.
