Presidential Election 2016: Good, Bad, or Disappointing?
The results of the presidential election came in late November 8th, and, needless to say, many Americans are unhappy with the results. The position of 45th president of the United States was given to Donald J. Trump, with 278 Electoral votes, compared to his competitor, Hillary Clinton, with 228 Electoral votes. This came as a shock to Democrats and Republicans across the country, as just hours before the announcement, Clinton was far in the lead. This also means that the Republican party would take over the US Senate and House, and the Democratic party, under the command of 44th president Barack Obama, would take their leave.
Donald Trump has proposed many ideas to, in his eyes, improve the country, and only time will tell if he actually goes through with any of his ideas. One his most infamous claims was that he would build an enormous wall across the border of Mexico and the United States (Texas, Arizona, New Mexico) to prevent any illegal Mexican immigrants from leaking into our country. This would be costly to the country, and to compensate for this, Trump claimed that he would have the Mexican government pay for it.
America is also to receive a new first lady, Melania Trump, who has also sparked controversy herself. Earlier this year, she gave a speech that sounded suspiciously familiar. Upon further inspection, people began to realize that most of her speech was literally word-for-word plagiarism of a speech first lady Michelle Obama gave while Barack Obama was still a candidate in 2008. This leaves many to believe that she may not be contributing much to the country as first lady. Also, in anything she’s stated thus far in her speeches (that Michelle Obama hadn’t already said in her previous speeches), she hasn’t mentioned anything worthwhile she’d be contributing.
Violent protests have sparked across the country upon the news of Trump’s election as well, including some right in front of the Trump Tower in New York City. Several protesters have been arrested, and it is very well apparent that the protests aren’t going to stop anytime soon.
It is a very difficult time for America because of the citizen’s reactions to the 45th President of the United States, and it will take time for Americans to cope with the fact that America is going to have an interesting next 4 years.
