Hispanic Heritage Month is recognized from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 and celebrates what Hispanic and Latino cultures have brought to the US. It is a time to recognize the diverse culture that has made our country a melting pot. To celebrate this month, we interviewed Canyon Vista staff to explain what being Hispanic means to them. We asked two main questions: 

• What does being Hispanic mean to you?
• Why do you think Hispanic Heritage Month is important?

A common response we received is that family is at the heart of Hispanic culture. Celebration, food, and language were also highlighted. There are different types of subcultures within the Hispanic and Latino community, during this month we recognize and celebrate that each person has a different experience and story to share. We interviewed Mrs. Gutierrez, 7th-grade assistant principal, who said that Hispanic culture is, “enriched with family.” Mr. Ramirez, an art teacher, shared what family meant to him. “Family is so important in the Hispanic culture,” he said. 8th-grade math teacher, Mr. Acosta, stated, “It’s important to be proud of your heritage.” Our staff is full of stories, please watch the video and celebrate Hispanic Heritage month with us.
