Throughout the years, Canyon Vista has changed a lot in many ways. These changes include the building, the student population, and classes offered. For the forty years the school has been open, we have all grown as a community in more ways than one.
Fashion Trends Through the Years
In 1987 preppy plaids, lace collars, converse high-tops, multi-colored Keds, Liz Claiborne purses, Swatch watches, Guess overalls, and denim jackets were the most popular styles and the biggest hits. In 2002 thrifting was very popular because you could get amazing steals at Goodwill. Because of the searing Texas heat many students wore flip flops with tank tops and shorts to school. Some students even liked to wear belts with things written on the buckles. In 2015 there were lots of trendy shoes like Hunter Boots which were very popular on rainy days. Other popular shoes were Tory Burch sandals, original White Converse, Chacos, and Adidas black and white Superstars. Students also loved wearing Fitbits and Lokai bracelets.
Changes in the Course Options, Clubs, and Policies
Some classes that year are no longer offered now. These include industrial arts, industrial technology, life skills, and office education classes. In 1993 the elective options were very unique; they included scuba diving, windsurfing, biking, and archery. French and Spanish used to be offered as clubs not electives. The difference between clubs that used to be offered and clubs that are offered now is very big. In 1997 there was a club called the Lifesavers. They planned different ways to make students feel included like making cards, and giving new students tours of the school. NJHS used to be called CVHH. Many policies have either been removed, or added since the school opened in 1984. When the school first opened they had a policy called lockouts to prevent tardies. What happened was once the tardy bell rang teachers would lock their doors so any remaining students in the hallways would get locked out of class. The consequence was five days of lunch duty.
Our Athletic Achievements
Canyon Vista Athletics are and have always been a very good program. All of our years have been very good, but some specifically are very noticeable and phenomenal. In 1987 volleyball won district and basketball placed high in district. History was made at Canyon Vista in 2022, when 7th grade A and B teams both won districts. Another time was in 2020 when both 7th and 8th grade took on Elgin middle school and beat them at the same time. Overall, there have been many times when Canyon Vista athletics were amazing and the years listed are just a few examples of how many achievements our school has made. In 1989 the track team broke 9 records and in 1990 the girls broke 4 records. In 2015 both boys and girls 7th grade basketball Red Teams were undefeated the whole season. In 2003 Volleyball Blue Team won district and 7th grade boys and girls basketball won district. In 2006 the Volleyball team won a very important game taking the district title.
Material Changes
Throughout the years, Canyon Vista’s physical look has changed a lot. These changes mostly happened during the schools first few years. In 1987, eight new classrooms were added, two computer labs, more lockers, and improvement on the crowding issue. In 1997, there were ten classrooms and two computer labs added. That year, Canyon Vista reconstructed the visitor parking lot to include a new wing. Overall, the school endured many good changes that made students and teachers’ lives easier and happier.
Helping Out the Community
Canyon Vista has always been helping out the community. In 2004 NJHS held a “CandyLand” dance as a fundraiser and raised approximately $1,000 for the community. In 2006 we turned our gym into a temporary shelter for about 450 evacuees whose lives were greatly affected from Hurricane Rita which struck the Texas coast at the end of September. Due to considerate donations by the staff and families, evacuees got to sleep on proper mattresses with bedding, and every child got coloring books.
Random Facts
In 1985 Popular Artists were Duran Duran, Van Halen, and Madonna. For you Top Gun: Maverick lovers, Glenn Powell went here in the early 2000’s. They used to have things called Mustang Pride cards that they had to sell and the 3 advisories that sold the most got a pool party. In 2009 there was a fake election for McCain or Obama so students could feel included in the voting process. If you got your phone taken away, you used to have to pay $15 to get cell phones back.
All in all, Canyon Vista has changed a lot in basically every way possible. Throughout each school year, trends, music, community, fashion, classes, and school changes were made. In four decades we have remade and transfigured the whole school and there are definitely going to be more changes to come.
