Easter is a Christian holiday which celebrates Jesus’s resurrection three days after he died on the cross. Although it is a Christian holiday, people celebrate it around the world in many different ways.
“Easter is one of my favorite holidays because the easter bunny gives me and my siblings a basket with candy. It is also my favorite because I get to hang out with my cousins and have fun,” said Niam Jacob (6).
Today Easter is celebrated by egg hunts and decoration but the holiday is really about Jesus and his resurrection. Jesus was buried in a tomb and disappeared by the third day. Then two angels appeared, saying that Jesus rose from the dead. Most people believe that we started doing egg related activities, because during Lent, the 40 days leading up to Easter, eating eggs was forbidden. Other people think that eggs represent Jesus rising from the tomb as a chick would from an egg.
“Some Easter traditions I have are me and my little brother doing an Easter egg hunt in our front yard. It is mostly for my brother but I still like to get candy. Me and my family also go to church to hear a sermon about Easter,” said Kennedy Klekar (7).
Many people celebrate Easter in different ways. Some people have grand dinners of roasted lamb, hot cross buns, and Easter bread, and some different Easter desserts. It is also common to see people dress up for Easter, wearing costumes like the Easter bunny. Other people may go to church to hear a sermon about Jesus’ resurrection. It is also typical to see families especially with young children doing easter egg hunts and decorating eggs.
“I love Easter because it is a time for me and all of my family to come together and sometimes my other family from out of town will come, and it’s really fun for me to hang out with them,” said Antara Save (7).
