Basketball tryouts happened on October 23-25. The CVMS coaches test each of the student’s skills ranging from dribbling, shooting, to scrimmaging. There were many people, each with a different skill set and potential to get on one of the two teams. The “A” team is the team for the best basketball players in the seventh grade while the “B” team is for the second best basketball players.
“I mean, 20 girls made the team out of 60 who tried and it was very obvious who was going to make ‘A’ team because they were mini Lebron James,” Norah Watson (7) said.
There are a variety of reasons why someone would want to try out for the basketball team whether it was glory, luck or trying to get more experience so they could make it next year, many say they will practice this entire year so they can make it next year and have more experience playing basketball. Now, basketball is a very competitive sport so there are a lot of rules and tension between the players who have more experience mainly and the upcoming players who have yet to play a game.
“I wanted to have some fun and see what trying out for basketball would be like. I think the level of competition there was very high because there are some crazy good people that would crush other people and they are the ones who would probably make ‘A’ team,” Vidyut Govindarajan (7) said.
The deciding factor according to the coaches for the Boys Basketball Team was experience. If you have played basketball for 2 weeks, 2 months, or 2 years, the real people who have the experience are separated from the rest and that’s what makes them so attractive to the coaches.
“I think my time playing basketball has affected my performance because I have only been playing basketball for 2 weeks but the coaches were very understanding so a few other people that had my experience level also came in due to the coaches probably wanting a variety of levels there on the team,” Watson said.
All in all, the basketball tryouts were a lot of fun to most people and many used it as practice seeing as only so many could get into the team. Everyone had the potential to make one of the two teams but CVMS only takes the top 20 every year.
“The people who made ‘A’ team should be role models for the entire school in basketball because they were just amazing on the court and on the sidelines, they were cheering each other on, making plays and scoring a lot,” Govindarajan said.
