Around the start of January, students with 95% grade average starting in the month received an opportunity letter into the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). NJHS brings the school’s commitment to many values of scholarship, leadership, service, character, and citizenship, and helps our students become knowledgeable and skilled citizens of our community.
“Well, we’re a service organization,” NJHS sponsor, Lindsey Phillips, said. “A lot of people don’t understand that, they think it’s some elitist, grade-based thing. But we do a lot of community service, members are required to do eight hours of service in their own time and sometimes we do group service projects.”
This year, students have created snack bags for hungry students. From Jan 27 – 31, it is staff appreciation week, NJHS is providing hot cocoa for the staff. They have also done things for custodian appreciation week, like making cards. Some students also showed up for campus beautification days.
“I do think NJHS could be beneficial in further succeeding in the future,” 7th grade student, Pearl Jani said. “And I do think that’s most people’s reason for trying to join NJHS. I know some people just want to be in a club, find people like them to hang out with and things like that.”
Jani mostly talked about the different reasons why people had joined the club. She and many of her friends didn’t have much clue what NJHS was until they got the form, and then they started digging into it. She also briefly talked about how many saw the application, and immediately knew they couldn’t fulfill the requirements. Jani said the application was a bit intimidating at first glance, but she was able to get through it.
