National Hug Your Hound Day
A soft click-clacking sound travels down the hall, accompanied by a thumping noise. An excited woof comes from the living room, and a furry face appears from around the corner. Leash in mouth, your dog pants in eagerness. It’s National Hug Your Hound Day, and your dog couldn’t be happier! Celebrated every year on September 8th, National Hug Your Hound Day was founded by author and canine behaviorist Ami Moore. Her goal was to make the United States more dog friendly.
Hug Your Hound Day not only encourages you to hug your dog, but also to pay attention to their life. As dog owners, we have the obligation to keep our pooches happy and healthy. Dogs have many requirements, each varying on the type of dog. In general, dogs should be fed quality dog food, where the main ingredient is meat. They need to be walked twice a day until they are tired. A dog’s fur should be brushed from time to time, their teeth brushed, nails clipped, and given a bath every once in a while. They also require positive social interaction. You can take them to a dog park, where they can meet other dogs, and make friends. Also, spending quality time with them will increase their trust in you and other people.
This is also a day to remind us that dogs help us, too. University of Wisconsin-Madison pediatrician James E. Gern conducted many studies that show owning a pet can reduce the chance of a child getting pet related allergies. In fact, his research has shown that kids who are exposed to pets while young develop stronger immune systems. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institute of Health both conducted heart related studies on pet owners. The results showed that pet owners have reduced blood pressure and lower cholesterol levels. These advantages are believed to be connected with a pets’ inclination to help reduce or at least control stress levels.
This national day of celebrating man’s best furry friend reminds us to connect with our pets. Take some time and spend a little time with them. Maybe playing fetch in the park, or going on a run with them. No matter what, this day reminds us to value and appreciate our canines. It’s also a chance to make sure their lives are happy, healthy, and safe.
