Dress Coded

Lately you may have noticed or seen many kids walking around in their gym shorts, which can only mean one thing: they got dress coded.

Canyon Vista’s new dress code is definitely a big issue right now among both the staff and students. The policy has become more strict and has limited more clothing items, labeling them as inappropriate and unsuitable for a learning environment. However, this rule seems to be limiting the way people dress, which to some is a form of expressing themselves.

The new dress code has banned popular clothing such as shorts shorter than mid-thigh (including windbreaker shorts), and any pants or leggings showing “curvature.” This is a controversy among many mustangs because they wear them very frequently. They feel that the policy is too demanding. “I don’t like it, it’s too strict. I don’t like that we can’t wear short shorts,” said 7th grader Isabelle S. She also thinks that everyone should be able to wear leggings if they are wearing a longer shirt.

However, most teachers seem to agree with the rule and some think it should be even more strict. “It’s too easy,” said Mrs. Callender. “I don’t think it’s strict enough.”

Ms. Collins, who is known for her extra-strict dress code policy, agrees. “I like people to follow the rules,” she said. “These guidelines are being strongly enforced to teach a lesson to kids who dress inappropriately.”

Even though it feels like the rules are just restricting us, it may be used to help us in the future. Most professions and businesses also require people to dress formally or appropriately. Students in Canyon Vista aren’t the only ones who have a dress code. “Teachers have dress codes too,” said Mrs.Collins. “We’re not allowed to wear jeans Monday through Thursday.”

Students who are dress-coded are sent to go change into their P.E. clothes. Ironically, sometimes the P.E. clothes do not meet dress code standards either. To some, dress code is limiting a freedom of expression at school, to others, it is looked upon as a way to prepare students for the future.
