Like all thoughtfully crafted songs, “Shadows Unleashed” provokes a strong, passionate whirlwind of emotions. Composed with dedication and hard work, it’s an incredible piece that will be performed by the Canyon Vista Honors Band at their upcoming fall concert. This brilliant song was carefully written by Brian Balmages, who visited Canyon Vista on Tuesday, September 30th.

Band Director Mr. Johnstone said he heard Balmages would be in the area helping with other programs. Johnstone was able to schedule a rare opportunity for the Honors Band, as it’s not everyday that you get to meet a famous composer and interact with them in person. Johnstone also pointed out that most of Balmages’ work is done in Baltimore, so having a chance to meet Balmages “on a rare visit to Texas was great.”

“Being able to interact with the composer of a piece you are performing is a unique opportunity for a musician. Many times, we are left to interpret the music we see on the page and to shape the performance the way we think the composer would like his or her music to sound,” Johnstone stated. When it comes to playing music, you never know how the composer wants their piece to sound. In the end, all you can do is build the phrases in a way that you think would help the piece come alive. Johnstone added that “Mr. Balmages’ guidance really helped our students play beyond the notes and rhythms.”

Johnstone was thankful for the experience and described it as simply incredible. Students are now able to look deeply into the music and perform it in a more devoted way.
