Technology is part of our everyday life, but wouldn’t it be cool if we could learn how to control it by coding?

Hour of Code is a non-profit project to teach people coding. No experience or knowledge of coding is needed before you start this, and when you finish the tutorials, you will have a basic knowledge of programming. Currently, there are 77,378 Hour of Code events going on in more than 180 countries, with over 30 languages that you can use.

Several coding websites work with the Hour of Code movement to teach people how to be able to create things by typing a few lines of code. These include Khan Academy, Codecademy, CodeHS, and more.

This year, Canyon Vista was chosen to be one of 100 schools to chat with Sheryl Sandberg, the Chief Operating Officer of Facebook. Each school got to ask her one question, and our school’s question was “What exciting possibilities do you see for the future of technology?”. To watch the highlights of the interview, check out this YouTube video.

Our school is participating in the Hour of Code event. During advisory, students will be learning one hour of basic programming with these tutorials that are on the Hour of Code website. These tutorials can also be used at home to learn coding individually. There are learning websites for anybody, ranging from 4 years old to 104 years old.

Last year, in one week alone, 15 million students in the world learned Hour of Code. Over 10 million girls tried computer science. Starting is simple, no signup or registering is needed.

Hour of Code is working to share knowledge of coding with more and more people. Have fun programming in the language of the future!
