On January 20, the UIL (University Interscholastic League) of Canyon Vista competed in various categories in Walsh Middle School. These competitions are highly competitive in Canyon Vista to most students.
“(I do this) Because, solely because, I feel like doing something for my school, because I really don’t go out and do many of these UIL contests and stuff, I just want to see how it feels like to be part of a team,” 7th grader Joseph Olson said.
This UIL competition is a multi stage competition divided into various competitions. There are Impromptu Speaking, Oral Reading, Ready Writing, Chess, calculator applications, Maps, Graphs, and Chats, Spelling, Number Sense, Social Studies, Dictionary Skills, Listening Skills, and Science are offered, a total of 12 categories for students to compete and grow their edge in various important skills, all while having fun with a good old competition.
There are also other categories not in Walsh in the art of theater, tennis, mariachi, robotics, football, debate, swimming, diving, wrestling, essaying, music, and much, much more.
“Yeah, we do a bunch of studying for the contest because there’s a bunch of questions that we need to know if we want to get a good score on the tests,” Joseph Olson (7) said.
UIL is a nonprofit organization created by the University of Texas in 1910 to provide for debate and athletics teachers with a competition and curriculum.
“I feel like I would believe in somebody who has good skills in both communicating with their team and they’re actually smart enough to actually get into the team, and solves a lot of stuff,” Joseph Olson (7) said.
