Every year, at CVMS, we conduct the University Interscholastic League (UIL) program for students on our campus. The UIL is an academic competition where students have different events to choose from that are educational, extracurricular, athletic, and artistic. At CVMS, we mainly focus on the education and academic part of UIL.
The competition is on January 25, 2025 at Walsh Middle School. The academically focused events that the students can compete for are Impromptu Speaking, Oral Reading, Ready Writing, Chess Puzzles, Mathematics, Calculator Applications, Spelling, Number Sense, Science, Social Studies, and Listening Skills.
“It gives them a place to practice and show knowledge that they wouldn’t have an opportunity to show in the classroom,” the CVMS Coordinator for UIL, Ms. Taylor, said. “It’s kind of going above and beyond. Helps them expand their classroom learning, for example in Science they can be tested above their grade level. Same thing with some math problems.”
She emphasized that these competitions help build up students’ academic progress and that she has coached and guided kids for the past 15 years. Ms. Taylor enjoys motivating students to compete in the competition. In speaking to a CVMS student who is competing in UIL, they confirmed that these competitions are very beneficial and help them showcase their talent in educational learning.
“Every year, I really look forward to the day before the competition. That day we get results on who gets into the competition. The competition day is always very stressful at first, but I end up having a fun time.” Vedant Rastogi, who has participated in UIL every year since third grade, said.
At the end of the competition, the judges count up all the points for each school and the school with the most points wins UIL. Last year, with all of our students’ efforts, CVMS was able to win the competition.
