Will it be a white Christmas?

Captivating white sheets of snow coating the ground is merely a sought after dream in the beating hot weather conditions. The lovely, icy white threads collecting on the grass is a rare occasion in Texas. However, winter is rolling up, the season remembered for holidays and bountiful snow. In Austin, the chance of beautiful flakes falling down on Christmas is low, but this year things might be different.

This winter has brought cold weather with students having to bundle up in warm jackets complete with other accessories like hats, boots, and scarves. In order for it to snow, the temperature must reach below freezing. This is not impossible, because it has been extremely chilly this month.  It must be cold so the water precipitation can freeze up into snow when it falls.

Snow on Christmas in Austin hasn’t happened in decades. Snow falling on a particular day is a slim chance. The white fluff has rarely lasted more than one day, which makes the possibility of it lasting throughout a course of a week very low. Though it hasn’t happened recently, that doesn’t mean it won’t this December 25th.

The most recent snow day happened over two years ago on February 4, 2011. “I remember drinking warm, hot chocolate and making cute snowmen with my older sister,” said 7th grader Nuha M. The day was memorable to many, since seeing weather like that is not something that happens every day.

There is still burning hope that this year, blankets of snow will stretch across the ground. Even if the chances are less than 10%, the icy weather is promising that there may be a difference this Christmas. A vision of snow is longed for and imprinted deeply in the minds of students, staff, and broadly, the residents of Austin.
