Book Review: What’s Left of Me
In the world of “What’s Left of Me”, one body holds two souls. Over time, the dominant soul takes over and the weaker soul lets go of control. This happens to everyone. Sometimes.
People that haven’t “settled” by the expected settling age are considered hybrids, a menace to humanity. Addie and Eva had a normal life, just like everyone else, taking turns for the control of their shared body. As the settling age of five creeps toward them, everyone thinks that Eva will leave them, and Addie will remain. But as they get older, the concerned thoughts grow. Eva just won’t go. After multiple visits to the doctor, the doctors finally claim that Eva is now gone. Yet hidden deep inside their body, only Addie knows that Eva still remains, clinging to the surviving puzzle pieces of her life.
Kat Zhang, the author of “What’s Left of Me”, weaves together a suspenseful and emotional story about risk and long forgotten memories. Two normal girls, Addie and Eva, don’t turn out as they thought they would. For three years, Eva clings to the remaining bits of her life. Her power to walk, to speak, to do things, disappear and she can only communicate with Addie in their minds. No one, not even their parents, know that she is still there. But one day, Addie and Eva find out that there may be a way for Eva to take control again. Addie first rejects the idea, but Eva insists. If they were to ever get caught, they would be taken away and placed with the other hybrids. But for Eva, she will do anything to gain her control.
The way that the author blends in hopes of desire and feelings of insecurity can hook almost anyone into reading this book. This book has taught me to be grateful for what I have and am able to do. My favorite thing about this book is how the author uses sorrow, passion, and danger to create a thrilling adventure. I would definitely recommend this book to readers who love a little romance, suspense and a mix of unknown emotions.
Not only is this book absolutely sensational, it is the first book in the Hybrid Chronicles. For those who read the book and completely enjoyed it, can also read the second book by Kat Zhang, “Once We Were.” A complete page-turner, “What’s Left of Me” is sure to keep you hooked all the way.
