According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over one-third of U.S. adults and 17% of children are obese. Choice of food is a huge factor in determining weight,  and when the word “healthy” becomes synonymous with the word “disgusting,” it is evident that obesity has transformed into an epidemic.

Luckily, PepsiCo and the Coca Cola Company have provided a solution to this problem—in drinks. This year, Canyon Vista is providing healthy alternatives to the typical artificial sodas and juices. With Coca Cola’s Izze, a carbonated fruit juice, and PepsiCo’s all-natural, Naked juice, students are sure to find a tasty yet nutritious beverage to add to their everyday meal.

Teachers as well as students are eager to try the cafeteria’s new drinks. 8th grade teacher Mrs. Buentello admits that though she hasn’t tried Izze yet, she’s looking forward to doing so because of all the positive reviews she’s heard about the soda. The teacher is skeptical about Naked juice however.

“I think the Naked ones have a weird concoction and so I don’t know if I would get that,” Buentello said.

It’s true that PepsiCo has been sued over their Naked juice. Up until 2013, the company claimed their juice was all-natural, 100% fruit, and non-GMO, among other phrases. In reality, some Naked products contain synthetic contents such as calcium pantothenate, an ingredient derived from formaldehyde, zinc oxide, and ascorbic acid. Soy in the drink was genetically altered, and the company received an earlier lawsuit because of the disguise of sugar in the ingredient list as “evaporated cane juice.”

Another concern about addition of the new drinks is the cost. A bottle of milk is the same price as a can of Izze soda, which leads to the issue that kids may prefer to purchase soda instead of milk. Though Izzes are made from fruit juice, even fruit juice doesn’t have the same nutritional value as milk. As Mrs. Buentello worries, “It’s quite discerning that kids don’t drink enough milk. They say osteoporosis could be worse in y’all’s generation because you don’t drink as much milk as some of us older folk.”

Osteoporosis is a condition where one’s bones become dangerously brittle. Fractures can occur so easily that bending over or suffering a minor fall can cause a disaster. Nowadays, doctors are encouraging kids to choose milk over sugary drinks such as Izze because of the bone-strengthening calcium milk provides.

Though Izze and Naked juice are definitely a healthier alternative to regular sodas and juices, it is important to remember that they lack important nutrients and may not always be completely true to their labels. Sugary drinks of any type, even ones advertised as “healthy” should be consumed in moderation. In the end, even though they aren’t the most nourishing drinks, introducing Izze and Naked to the cafeteria is a step in the right direction to a more balanced meal.
