Mustang Profile: Brooklin Smith

Since 2012, eighth grader Brooklin Smith has been training almost every day for the 2019 Crossfit Games, the highest-ranking challenges of the sport crossfit. This competition combines weights, cardio, and technique to create an all-around athletic workout. Smith eats, sleeps, and breathes crossfit, all for the chance to compete with the best of the best.

Smith’s dedication has left her after school hours completely booked. Once Smith comes home, she immediately starts with her homework. At 5:30 p.m., she’s off to the crossfit gym. “The crossfit community is so motivational.” Smith raves, “Their personalities are contagious. It keeps me going and helps me stay dedicated.”  Her crossfit family is exactly what crossfit means to her: a sense of home and security. And having a strong vision and well-set goals definitely helps continue her motivation to reach the Crossfit Games. Smith first became interested in crossfit when her dad talked her into it. He had already been taking a few of the classes for a while, and said it would be tons of fun. Clearly, he was right.

On a perfect day for her, it’s the weekend and to start it off there is a private, fun workout with her coaches at the gym. A day without a trip to the gym would definitely be a challenging day for her. “I would miss it. It makes me a better and much happier person.” Smith explains. Afterwards, she likes a good breakfast at Moonshine Patio Bar and Grill, a restaurant that serves contemporary comfort food. After that, the rest of the day is hers. Maybe she’ll do homework, work on her blog, go on a bike ride, whatever she wants. She loves exploring Austin with her family and going to the movies. Finally, she’ll finish off her perfect day in the kitchen, cooking a delicious turkey or chicken burger with roasted brussel sprouts and sweet potatoes. That’s one of her hobbies: cooking. Aside from that she also plays the piano and enjoys art.

Once Smith has competed in the Crossfit Games, she plans to continue on her crossfit journey by opening her own gym.  “Crossfit has given me confidence and a much healthier look and feel. I’m rarely sick, and I feel so fortunate.” Smith also adds, “The gym is my safe place. A life without crossfit is impossible to imagine for me.”
