Every year in October, Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) holds All Region Orchestra auditions. The students who are auditioning are given audition material to practice one month prior to the audition dates. On October 9th and 10th, the middle school cello, bass, violin, and harp auditions were held at Hudson Bend Middle School, while the wind and percussion auditions were held in early November.

The audition material is usually one to two pages focusing on shifting, spots for vibrato, and dynamics to show the judges your skill. There are two middle school orchestras, one high school, and one harp ensemble. The number of people that are able to make the groups are limited, so students work hard to do their best.

Eighth grade student Sanjay Balakarishan says that not only is the music challenging, but the actual audition itself. “It’s really stressful because you’re staring at a white wall and you know that people are watching your every move.” Eighth grader Anna Wicker agrees that the biggest struggle is, “performing in front of people.” But All Region has many benefits. Eighth grader Nathan Early hopes to, “be able to stand up in front of people and play more confidently.”

Canyon Vista orchestra director, Elizabeth Frederick, encourages her students to participate in All Region. “All Region forces you to play music ‘above your head’. It forces you to play challenging music and compete against others. You learn through the process,” Mrs. Frederick says. She also agreed that, “It’s very stressful, which is good.”

Although All Region can be stressful, it is a great way to conquer your fears and learn something new. If you’re given the chance to audition for All Region, definitely give it a try. The concerts are held on November 14th at the RRISD Performing Arts Center, and everyone is welcome to attend.
