This year, Mrs. Jalil, a sixth and seventh grade Language Arts teacher, and Mrs. Gill, a World Cultures and Texas History teacher, changed from teaching inside the Canyon Vista building to teaching outside in a portable classroom.

Canyon Vista received a portable in front of the school near the sixth grade entrance during the summer of 2015 because of Canyon Vista’s growing population and the number of teachers sharing rooms.

Teaching in a portable offers many advantages, but for the mustangs, there are some challenges. “Getting to class on time is a bit difficult for the kids,” Mrs. Gill and Mrs. Jalil explained.  Since getting to class on time can be challenging, students are allowed more time. 6th grader Alexander Swanson said, “Mrs. Jalil lets us leave two minutes early and get here two minutes late.” Because of the location, some students like 6th grader Alex Bednarz “sometimes trip on the rocks walking to class.”

Another disadvantage is the weather. 6th grader Sophie Clift says that, “Sometimes it’s really hot outside.” Despite the weather, Clift enjoys hearing the birds and nature outside.

For Mrs. Jalil, teaching in a portable has many benefits. This year, Mrs. Jalil was hoping for a bigger classroom. When asked if she liked teaching in a portable, she replied, “Definitely. It’s like a little home.” Sixth grader Pascal Garcia agrees, “The portable is bigger than the classrooms inside.”

Overall, the portables are a useful addition to the school and provide mustangs with a great learning environment.
