What happened to Toys R Us?
Toys R Us is a retail store for toys and products for kids and early teenagers. An all-time favorite, Toys R Us was a store that I loved to go to as a kid. It was my happy place, but sadly, it won’t be any more for the millions of young Americans.
Early this year, Toys R Us announced that they are closing 180 stores nationwide. Even worse, they will be filing for bankruptcy for $5 billion dollars. All of this isn’t due to less inventory, but not enough customers. With Amazon selling everything you could possibly think of, retail stores are taking the downhill. Toys R Us has $250 million in loss, and are continuing to lose more. While Amazon’s toy sales were shooting up by 24%, Toys R US had the opposite.
The situation they are facing is every business worst nightmare, and Toys R Us is experiencing it. Studies say that since the cost of living has gotten more expensive over the years, there aren’t any more stay-at-home parents. While both parents go to work, they don’t have the time to go to stores to buy toys for their kids. With Amazon in, they can just order it online without having to go there themselves and spend valuable time.
When asked what went wrong, they said that their holiday season went terrible and that Toys “R” Us is already burning nearly $100 million per month to keep their store open till the end of the year. So if you have any last minute shopping, the CEO of the company, David Brandon, said that all their products will be on sale. Toys R Us hasn’t made a full year-profit since 2012, and they’re unfortunately sinking down. I guess technology is ruining traditional businesses, thus making this a win-lose situation.
I love shopping online, but the feeling of going to the store myself is something I will always miss. 3
