Warning:
This is my harsh opinion, and if you loved the movie, maybe you just have a better mind than me and are able to understand higher forms of entertainment. So please don’t violently threaten me.
Also, there are heavy Spoilers in this article.
My Response to RBtI
Being a fan of Wreck it Ralph, I was excited to see a sequel with a loving character. Seeing the setting was on the internet, I was skeptical at first but I learned to appreciate it. When I saw the movie, it was one of the first times I remember going from laughing at the movie’s writing to almost falling asleep in an instant. And before we start off the review, for those who haven’t seen it, here is the list of internet references I remember:
- eBay
- Google
- Youtube
- Pinterest
- A LOT OF DISNEY ADVERTISING THEIR WEBSITE
- Twitter
- Snapchat
- And many others I didn’t mention because there’s a lot of them
And now for the “memes:”
- “CaN I HaS ChEeSe bUrGeR?”
- Chewbacca mom
- “Deal with it” glasses
- Bee Puns (I believe is a subtle Bee Movie reference.)
- Screaming goats (which I forgot existed)
- Bob Ross
- Unboxing videos
- (yes it made the cut) FORTNITE
- Cat videos
- Baby videos
- Rick Rolling (Or in this case RALPH Rolling)
- And many others I didn’t mention because there’s a lot of them
Review Time
Plot:
Ralph and Venelope are playing around in the arcade and burping loudly(?) as Venelope is slowly getting bored of her job as a Sugar Rush racer. Ralph understands this and builds a new race track for her. Venelope loves it with a passion but causes the race wheel to break on her arcade machine. She has a speech about why Sugar Rush gives her purpose in life (even though she was getting bored of it). Ralph wants to get a new wheel for Venelope, seeing some kid looking it up on eBay about to buy it. Then the arcade gets wifi connected to it. Ralph and Venelope go to eBay to find the wheel but fail due to insufficient funds. Suddenly, Scammly the pop-up add (good child name, parents) appears in front of them, selling his website to those whom "Want to get rich off of playing video games." They go to a racing battle royale game called slaughter race to steal a fake car for the money (which I'm pretty sure is impossible to steal from one game into a website) And then they meet a cool girl named Shank and she tries to kill them. Ralph and Venelope escape. Ralph goes to Youtube to get famous and becomes an internet phenomenon by twisting the system (sounds familiar...) as Venelope wants to live in Slaughter race, despite having a speech about why Sugar Rush gives her meaning. Wreck it Ralph naturally doesn't want her to go, so after gaining the money for eBay, he goes to the dark web to get a virus in Slaughter Race to make the cars slower. Instead, the virus copies insecurities in the code, which happened to be Venelope. She gets mad at Ralph, and the virus gets let free. Long story short, the virus copies Ralph and makes a giant Ralph with a battle that lasts too long with nothing happening but dialogue. In the end, Ralph lets Venelope leave her friends, family, and the life she had at home to be in the edgy race game even though she had a speech about Sugar Rush giving her meaning.
Characters:
The characters in Ralph Breaks the Internet hardly act like the ones in the first film. Ralph has been reduced to the "fat slapstick comedian". Venelope is now the main character that seems to be perfect. Fix it Felix and Sergeant Calhoun are now "We're married and that's our only character trait!". The new characters are even more one-sided. KnowsMore is the smart one, Spamley is the sketchy one, Yesss (the best character name) is the trendy one, and Shank is the strong independent cool female. It's sad to think about the drop in quality between the characters in the movies. There are many flaws in the characters, such as Venelope always changing her mind on what she wants, Wreck it Ralph's new character that forgets about his past, and the downgrade in the character of Fix it Felix and Sergent Calhoun. The only reason critics like the characters in this movie are because they liked the first movie.
Writing:
The writing sounds like a really long advertisement. They point out random websites just to say "Look! That's a website. I can approve of that". The entire Disney scene that is in the trailers is only there to drive Vennelope's character into a weird direction that honestly doesn't fit. Speaking of scenes that drag on for too long, the final battle is weird, uncomfortable, and sounds like it doesn't know what it wants to be. Why was the Pinterest scene added to the final battle if it was forgotten seconds later? Because the movie isn't just written like a bad advertisement. It is a bad advertisement.
Conclusion:
It seems that I have the unpopular opinion here, as many others believe it's a good movie. There's a lot more that I didn't cover, so see the movie yourself! It's worth seeing, but not twice!
