The Arrest at Starbucks

This month many crazy events happened and one that I found particularly crazy, was the arrest made at Starbucks last week. An employee at a Starbucks location in Philadelphia called 911 to arrest two black men. well, if you are like most people, you would ask “What did they do that got them arrested?”. The answer, nothing. According to CNN, “On Thursday, the two men asked to use the coffee shop’s restroom. An employee refused the request because the men had not bought anything, officials said. They sat down, and they were eventually asked to leave. When they declined, an employee called the police. ”

Starbucks Chief Executive Officer, Kevin Johnson, has apologized and has said: “I will fix this.” He wants to come to a resolution on how they can fix the issue. Johnson said in an interview with ABC’s “Good Morning America” that what happened to the men was “wrong,” and that he wanted to meet with them personally to apologize. “It’s my responsibility to understand what happened and what led to that, and ensure that we fix it,” Mr. Johnson said. He said that the company was reviewing its guidelines, which can differ among its 28,000 stores worldwide, and that it would invest in unconscious bias training. The company instructs employees to call the police in certain situations, such as those involving “threats or disturbance,” Mr. Johnson said.

Starbucks will close for racial bias training all over the world on May 29, 2018. We don’t know if this will work but what we do know is that action needs to be taken to prevent this from happening in the future.
