Five Fun Facts About Pasta
Pasta. Pasta is one of my favorite foods. I love every bit of pasta. The soft texture, the rich sauce, and the amazing aroma. In this article, I will tell you some interesting facts about pasta.
- Pasta was not from Italy. Contrary to popular belief pasta did not come from Italy. The first types of pasta actually came from China. Marco Polo introduced the dish to Italy after his expeditions to China. This dish became very popular in Italy and the artisans in Italy made their own changes to the dish to become the Pasta it is today.
2. Pasta has nearly 600 different shapes! Each shape has to be carefully handcrafted by artisans to attain perfection. Some examples may be farfalle, spaghetti, ravioli, Puccini, fusilli, penne and more.
3. There is a tool that is used to make traditional pasta called the bicicleta. The bicicleta looks like a pizza cutter with more wheels. This is used to cut the pasta into interesting shapes. The zig zag margin on pasta such as Farfalle, or bow-tie pasta is made by using the bicicleta.
4. A Pasta prank was pulled on the public by BBC on April 1st, 1957. Back then, Pasta was a delicacy. Most families did not know the exact details of how the dish was made. BBC, for an april fools prank did a section showing that pasta growed on trees. Many families actually believed this farce. This is the first recorded april fools prank on television.
5. Pasta is not just a dish, but rather a serious religion. The religion is known as Pastafarianism. The devotees of this religion follow the great spaghetti monster. Pastafarians wear a traditional hat known as a strainer. A polish man fought a legal battle to continue wearing his strainer in official pictures due to religious reasons.
