4 Myths You Thought Were True But Aren’t

1.) The Great Wall of China can be seen from space.

One popular myth about space exploration is that the Great Wall of China is the only human-built structure that can be seen from space. But this is not true. The theory that the wall could be seen from space dates back to at least 1938. It was repeated and grew until astronauts landed on the Moon. The reality is that you can’t easily see the Great Wall with the naked eye, even from low Earth orbit. And certainly, the Apollo astronauts couldn’t see it from the Moon, even though that legend has been widely spread. Astronauts have tried to take pictures of the great wall from space. This one taken by astronaut Leroy Chiao in 2004 was the first picture the great wall was visible in . Leroy Chiao said after taking the picture he didn’t see the wall with his naked eyes, and wasn’t sure if the picture showed it in the first place.

2.) Bulls hate the color red.

Bulls don’t actually hate the color red. In fact, they can’t even really see the color red. Bulls, like all other cattle, are colorblind to red. So why do they charge at a bullfighter’s red cape then? It’s not the color, but rather the movement of the cape that makes bulls so angry. Moreover, the bulls used in bullfights are from a very aggressive breed, and they’re raised in a way that any sudden movements will make these bulls angry and make them attack. So why do bullfighters use red capes? A red-colored cape is used purely as a matter of tradition. Also, the red color of the cape helps mask the blood of the bull as it is fended off by the bullfighter.

3.) Goldfish have a memory span of 3 seconds.

Scientists have proven that goldfish memory spans are nowhere near as short as three seconds. Your goldfish can actually remember things for at least five months!  Scientists have done multiple studies to disprove this myth. In one study, scientists added a lever to a goldfish tank, which dispensed food when pressed. Once goldfish learned to press the lever, they would regularly return to it to get more food. Even more amazingly, the goldfish actually learned to press the lever at the right time of day! Researchers adjusted the lever so that it would only dispense food within a one-hour window and the fish learned to come back each day around that time.

4.) A banana grows on a tree.

Bananas do not grow on trees.  Actually, they grow from a root structure that produces an above ground stem.  The plant is specifically classified as a tree-like perennial (plants that live for more than two years) herb. An herb is any seed-bearing plant that does not have a woody stem and dies down to the ground after flowering. In fact, the banana is the largest flowering herb, growing up to 25 feet in height.
