It’s that time of year again! Halloween is just around the corner, bringing candy, spooky decorations, and costumes. Although Halloween is known for kids ringing doorbells chanting “trick-or-treat!” and receiving sweets, this day is more than just candy. Here are some treats to creep you out a little bit or even make you hungrier than before.

Many people stick to candy during Halloween like 6th grader Gus Wendland. He says Twix© are his favorite treat for the spooky night. Many others also preferred the chocolates we consume every year, but some students had other thoughts. “ I like pumpkin pie,” said 6th grader Lakshya Verma, referring to his last Halloween. He also says it [pumpkin pie] is unique. Just like pumpkin pie, these treats are unique, too.

The first one is Dracula’s Teeth cookies. These are simple to make. First, cut a chocolate chip cookie in half. Cover the insides of both halves with red frosting. Then, place six to eight mini marshmallows along the curved part of one the cookie halves, depending on the size of your cookie. For additional support, place another row of marshmallows in the back of the same cookie and coat with red frosting to make it look like gums in your mouth. Then place the other half onto the cookie half bearing the marshmallow teeth. Attach two almond slivers into the front marshmallows (the teeth part) to make the fangs. This is optional but it looks more like Dracula’s teeth this way. Voila! Your first treat is ready!

This next sweet is Glow-in-the-Dark cupcakes. They look great at the end but does require some patience along the way. First, buy pre-made cupcakes or make your own and frost them. Place the cupcakes in the freezer and begin making the glow-in-the-dark jello mixture. To make the jello mixture, mix any flavor jello with one cup boiling water into a small bowl and stir about 2 minutes until the jello is fully dissolved. After one minute, pour one cup of tonic water (a carbonated soft drink) into the jello-water mixture. Now fill a larger bowl with ice cubes and place the smaller bowl inside. Continue stirring as the mixture cools. When the mixture has cooled, remove the small bowl from the larger bowl. Now, it’s time to dip the cupcakes into the mixture. One by one, grab cupcakes from the freezer and dip them in the jello. After dipped, place the cupcakes back in the freezer for five minutes and repeat the dipping process five more times. After completion, keep the cupcakes in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

So, as Halloween creeps closer, gather some simple ingredients to make delicious treats for friends, family, and most importantly, you! Halloween is a fantastic time to set your creativity free and to try new things. So go ahead and try something new this Halloween.
